I know, I'm an awful blogger! We welcomed a baby girl December 7th (after a long and PAINFUL month of kidney stones in November) and I'm finally getting back on track with things.

A friend of mine is expecting a baby boy in March and we couldn't be happier for her! I actually started the quilt in October but with my machine on it's last leg I didn't finish it until last week by borrowing a friends machine. I chose very boyish colors and some SUPER cute sock monkey fabric.

Once I finished it I immediately starting thinking of fabrics to use for a new quilt for Owen's 2nd birthday. I just LOVE the windmill design! What do you think?

A friend of mine is due only 3 days before me with a baby girl as well! We decided to throw each other a baby shower and since she already has a little girl she opted for the ever popular "diaper shower."

June's Finished Quilt

I finally finished June's quilt last night! It's not perfect (of course) but I think it turned out pretty cute. I'm in desperate need of an upgrade in my sewing machine so I can make one without imperfections but until then it will have just a few flaws. :-)

I was so excited to finally use all the vintage fabrics I'd been saving and even used the cross stitch book my sister gave me to make the "J."

I'm not a huge fan of pink but I made sure to put plenty in there with the blue.

Owen seems to like it too. :-)

We recently found out our little nugget is a girl! While I'm still getting used to the idea I am falling in LOVE with girl fabrics. I started this quilt for her and have almost finished the top layer. I was pretty excited to finally have an excuse to use all the vintage fabric I scored at the flea market a year ago. It was supposed to be quartered like this:

But I went for a more simple approach:

I'm not loving that heart so I'm playing with the idea of putting a "J" there.

New-Old Dress.

I found a great spring dress at a second hand store in SLC last month for only $6! I felt so cool that I was part of the "old school VIPs," who knew about the secret discount card that they no longer give out but still honor. :-) I love the colors and love that it's empire waisted so I can continue wearing it as my belly grows. Problem is, as my belly grows it gets increasingly shorter. Not wanting to be a pregnant hussy I added a black panel to the bottom and problem solved! I actually like it much better with the black. What do you think?

I made a quilt for some dear friends of ours who are having a baby boy next month!
We're so excited that we'll actually be in town the month he'll be arriving!

It seems silly but I actually had a VERY hard time picking out fabrics for this one. When you're making a gift for someone else it's always a little intimidating. I had to recruit my sister, Deb, once again for some help on the last few prints. Brilliantly, she picked out three beautiful prints that brought the whole quilt together.

I did a little better this time but I'd be lying if I said there weren't a few mistakes here and there. :-)
All in all, I think I'm getting the hang of this quilting thing. In fact, I already bought the fabric for my next one! Not sure who it's going to but the fabric was just too cute (and cheap! I had a coupon) to not buy it. :-)

About two months ago I decided to make Owen a quilt for his 1st birthday. That was the plan anyhow. It seems the universe was against me! My sewing machine broke twice and I finally had to have a lady at the repair shop sew the last few lines before the hand stitching started. Nevertheless, I prevailed!

I'm pretty proud of it even though it has several mistakes.
I justify that it being my first I'm allowed a few mistakes here and there. :-)

Forgive me dear friends for my long absence. I've been busy growing a baby in my belly! In order to clear up some FAQs you may have, I've loving stolen this Q&A from my good friend Andi.

Pregnancy FAQs
Q: How are you feeling?
A: I'm definitely not about to join an pie eating contests right now, that's for sure. I'm pretty sick most days and puke when I even LOOK at food that grosses me out. That said, I don't have it nearly as bad as others who are getting their fluids thru IVs so I'm VERY grateful.

Q: Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?
A: It's so early that I really can't say with conviction like I could with Owen but there is a nagging voice in the back of my head saying it's a girl. There is another nagging voice saying I'm always wrong so ..... :-)

Q: Are you going to find out the sex before the baby's born?
A: Absolutely. I would love to be one of those people who could have a surprise by choice but I'm a type A planner and I just can't handle not knowing! Tim isn't fond of the surprise idea either.

Q: Were you trying, or was this an "oops!" baby?
A: "Oops!" just sounds so mean and unwanted! We definitely weren't planning on it for at least another year but now that the deed is done we definitely are excited. Excited, shocked, nervous, terrified and thrilled all at once. Honestly, I'm still so thrown at the news that I forget that I'm pregnant all the time. I even bought 4 more tests after the first 2 just to "make sure," because it wasn't sinking in.

Q: Are you going to give birth naturally?
A: We'll see. I'm not going to rule it out because I definitely have a breaking point but I've heard recovery is easier when you don't have an epidural. (*or a third degree tear! boo!)

Q: Have you thought of names for the baby?
A: Absolutely. Like I said, type A planner. I started hounding Tim about names the day we found out. We have a name set for a girl (always have) but we're struggling with boy names yet again. We are hoping for a girl just so the poor child will have a name before his 10th birthday.

Q: Are you scared?
A: Extremely. More so than with our first. With our first we were blissfully unaware of the "hitting a brick wall of realization," moments. I think this time I know more of what "could," happen and I'm afraid of how to handle it with a very active toddler and no family within 500 miles. That said, I do have moments of "hey, I'm a pretty good mom," and it helps build up my confidence that it won't be as chaotic as I imagine.

Q: Is this pregnancy much like your first?
A: Yes and no. My pregnancy with Owen was fairly effortless til the last trimester with only small bouts of nausea. Heck, I only vomited twice the whole pregnancy and both times they were pre-labor induced. Differences I've noticed so far is I'm ridiculously emotional with this one. I only had a crazy pregnant woman cry episode ONCE with Owen and it wasn't til I was 6 months along. With this one I knocked that record out before we even realized I was pregnant. (and the tallies are still racking up!) Also, cravings are totally different things and came much earlier.

Q: When are you due?
A: We're due first part of December. Which is scary. December/January/February are FULL of birthdays, anniversaries and GERMS! And as a December baby myself (12/27) I already feel sorry for the kid. December is a tough month to have a birthday. But hey, at least we can count it on our taxes, right? :-)

Q: Do you want a boy or girl?
A: Honestly, I love boys, they are just so much fun. When I picture my ideal family when we're older it's just FULL of boys. I know Tim really wants a girl though and since everyone on his side of the family are fighting for our favorite girl name it'd be nice to have a girl too. :-)

Q: Are you just having one?

A: That remains to be seen! We had an ultrasound and they did find another sac but couldn't see well inside it. Chances are it's nothing and it will just resorb or something but they haven't ruled it out completely. Fraternals twins DO run in my family so you never know!

Gleeks Unite!

I admit it. I'm a total Glee fan! The first season was AH-MAZING! I was so excited for the new season to start that I quite literally squealed in delight when my husband reminded me it was on that night. That said, I've been uber disappointed with this season. I'd love to hear from all of you "Gleeks," out there to see if you agree with me on the following points.

The Good:

I just LOVE Rachel's outfits. Sometimes she does look like a preppy school girl but her style is oh so cute.

Ms. Pilsbury's clothes are super cute too. Sometimes a little too funky but I still love it.

I love that they are giving Mercedes more of a chance to shine in this season. I LOVE her voice. Her "smash the windows out-cha car," song was my favorite of the season aside from "Rain on My Parade." Guess it's the ghetto fab in me.

I like that they are stretching out the Finn/Rachel love story. That's what made The Office so good for so long! It'll be even greater when they actually do get together for real.

The Bad:

Is it just me or is Mr. Schuster a major man skank? He's not even divorced yet and he's already macked on 3 or 4 women! And whatever happened to his love affair with Emma?

I know the guest star thing is kind of in right now but I didn't like her the first time she was on the show. Sure she can sing but he is such a drag. And her character is oh so gross. And what's that? Mr. Schu is going to convince you to stop drinking and better your life? Where have I heard this before?

All the side stories are so jumbled. It's like there is no real plot going on besides Sue wanting to squash Glee club and we all know that can't happen or there wouldn't be a show. Where's the juicy story that keeps me on the edge of my seat til next weeks episode?!

Is Quinn pregnant still or what? In some scenes she's pregnant but in all the singing scenes she's miraculously without a baby bump. Am I this only one bothered by this inconsistency?

I hate to say it but the songs this season are soooooo cheesy. And though I'm all for spreading the message of loving yourself that episode was just way too "after school special," for me.

Why are they turning funny, hilarious Kurt into some boring emo kid? Not cool.

If Mr. Schu cries at the end of every episode I'm going to barf. You're a grown man!
We've seen you cry enough!

Watermelon.

It's amazing what a little watermelon can teach you.

Here's what I learned:

Cutting up a watermelon can make you feel like an hibachi knife master in seconds!
I felt like I had some mad skills even though it was just soft pieces of fruit flying around.

Turns out a HALF of a watermelon is enough to feed us for a week.

Owen is a watermelon monster. He just can't get enough.
Also, he doesn't know how to take small bites. I give him an inch and he takes a mile.

It's best to have paper towels on hand.
Especially if you're planning on eating it with a 1 year old on a white couch. Whoops.

Can leave you DRENCHED in pink in seconds. De-lish-us.

So perfect on a spring day.

Michael Buble: I like you but I'll always think of you as the poor man's Frank Sinatra.

Went through 3 hours of errands with my fly down without noticing. :-S

Cleaned my apartment just enough to give it the "It's normally this clean" look and not the "I just spent all day cleaning" look for my parents visit tomorrow.

I still take naps when my baby does.

Stopped stitching straight lines on Owen's birthday quilt and didn't even care.

I made Tim cook dinner tonight.

I buy things on clearance if even it's only $1 off.

I didn't love the first episode of Glee this season. Dun, dun, dun!

I get sucked in by the simplest of commercials ie: chapstick lip massage. Bought it the very next day.

I've been dying to buy a sundress but haven't because I hate chasing Owen, half dressed, when he escapes from the dressing room.

I found this mirror at the thrift store for a mere $3.99! I was actually looking for something totally different so I tried to leave it behind but I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it so I justified it. *I mean, it was $3.99!

I love the classic lines and mirrors are an apartment-living-girl's best friend.
It was VERY dirty and the color was like a maude purplish? Not my favorite.
It definitely needed some work.

Wa-lah! I love this pale blue color and it adds some brightness to the living room.
Maybe it will help me pick some coordinating pillows finally! ha! :-)

p.s That's the ottoman I bought for $6! My feet are LOVING it.

I Confess!

In my younger years I frequented the Taco Bell since it was the only fast food place open past midnight. I hadn't eaten there in YEARS but for some reason when I passed it on Saturday I just HAD to have it.

It was a loooong day prefaced by a very long night (Owen had a brief spurt of sleeping and now is back to getting up every hour) so after putting baby O to bed I left DH home so I could pick up some Taco Bell deliciousness. I was so proud of myself! I got there and totally remembered I wanted baja sauce, no lettuce and hot sauce. After YEARS of not ordering I still had it. Boo-yah.

I didn't even check the bag I was so confident.

I got home and realized I had order the chicken gordita and not the cheesy chicken gordita crunch which surprisingly are TOTALLY different. I was so angry. I want to start slamming doors, scream and throw it at the wall. The baby was asleep, I quickly reasoned, and stopped myself. Instead, I stormed into the bedroom and started crying. Yes, CRYING! A grown woman crying over a stupid taco?! I guess that's what happens when your sleep deprivation catches up to you.

So yes, my name is MyLyn Wood and I cried over a cheesy chicken gordita crunch.
What.a.wuss.

Pink is not my favorite color. I used to love it until my mom dressed my sister and I in matching pink outfits. After a few years of pink, pink, pink and having to explain that no, we are not twins, I have a bit of a stiffy towards it. But I have to admit it's been growing on me a lot lately. {Craft Space} Before & After

I was in major need of a place to put all of my "crafting" what-have-yous but unfortunately in our crowded apartment I had very little options.
Option 1: Owen's room. There is a nice corner there that would do nicely. Problem is I do most of my sewing/crafting/etc. whilst he is asleep. So in theory I could put it there, but never get anything done.

Option 2: In the living room. I actually tried this one for a month and it just made the floorplan seem really tight. Plus my sewing threads were alllll over the place which made it hard for quick cleanings when company came over.

Option 3: Rearrange the bedroom and use a wall. I tried to avoid this since the husband hates to move furniture around. I finally persuaded him and honestly the room feels bigger even though we put more stuff in it. It took a few days to get everything labeled and put in it's place but it is finally finished and I am thrilled!

Before:

What a mess. I had my scrapbooking, sewing, and card making supplies all over the place in random boxes since my drawers were already FULL of fabric. And because it was such a mess already we kept adding things to the pile ie: a pile of socks, Owen's sippy cup, my outfit from the day before, etc.

The Glorious After:

It's like I can hear angels singing. The best part is I only spent $10 on the whole thing! I am loving it and I thinks it makes our bedroom look better since it's always the last on the list to improve.

What I used:
*The bookcase is one I had in the kitchen holding all of my cookbooks, etc. It was crowded an already small space so I moved them to the hutch and brought it in here.

*The baskets are mostly from Owen's room. We had some room in his drawers so I decided to swap.

*The vintage cans I found at the thrift store a long time ago. I've had them since the summer maybe? I can't remember. Anyhow, they're great for holding all my sewing extras like my collection of bias tape, thread, etc.

*I got the towel holder for $1 at the thrift store! I love the patterns on fabric and lots of times I'll make something with 2 or 3 fabrics and decide I don't like how they go together. This way I can try it out and see if I like them while putting them on display.

*The caddy is actually a sponge holder for your kitchen but who would know, right? I snagged it for $1 at the thrift store as well.

*The vase holding the windmills (for Owen's birthday!) was leftover from our wedding 3 years ago.

*I stashed the rest of my fabric in this magazine holder that I took from Owen's room as well. It used to house more of Tim's pharmacy notes. Now they are in yet another box in our closet.

*Desk calender from the dollar aisle at Target.

*Frame from the Flea Market. It used to be hanging in the dining room/living room area but I took it down when I put up the hutch so I decided to paint it and reuse it as an inspiration board.

So what do you think? Definitely an improvement, no?

some things I need to get off my chest....

I know I've already done a confession this week but there are some things I just need to get off my chest.

So, perhaps I'm a bit of a freak but I can't figure out what color pillows to put on my cream couch. Hello?! How hard could it be? Wasn't that the whole reason I picked a cream colored couch so that picking fabrics for throw pillows would be cake? It seems like everything goes with white but cream doesn't seem to jive well somehow? What is wrong with me?!

It's suuuuper windy here in ABQ today and so help me, if one more thing from my neighbors balcony gets blown into mine......

Also, if the winds and all the noise it's making wakes up Owen from his nap, I'm going to be angry.

To the lady who is cleaning out my secret stash of vintage fabrics at the flea market: You officially suck. I've been in 6 times in the past 2 weeks just trying to get there before her and she always beats me. I hate when I have a go-to place and someone else rains on your parade. Plus, I've been told thru my sources that she buys them out and sells them for ridiculous prices at her antique shop.

Don't guys know you're supposed to open doors for women? My mother would be appalled. And since I'm turning into my mother, I am appalled.

Seriously, baskets are $10 ..EACH? When did whicker baskets become so expensive? And WHY?!

Why is it that when I go somewhere with the motive to only buy a specific thing there are HUNDREDS of temptations but when I finally earned some disposable income I come home empty handed?

Sink: Why aren't you ever empty?

Dear Husband: I know you're a student but do you really need to keep every.single.handout for the whole 4 years? What makes you think you're going to go thru all of those before your licensing exam? 5 boxes of notes and worksheets so far? I will bet you $100 you won't even touch them. Lucky for me you won't realize this til AFTER the fact and in the meantime our closet doors won't close.

There's nothing worse than finding a SUPER cute designer dress in your size at the thrift store, only to find that it's too short for you to wear to church. Boo.

I've been looking for an ottoman since the dawn of time but I'm never willing to pay much for it.
The other day at the thrift store I found a tan leather one for only $6! Even then, if you can believe it, I passed it up! The next day I came to my senses and went back for it.

And now, not only does it give my poor knees a rest and my husband a spot to sit on the couch, Owen has found a new "walker." He seriously will push this thing allllllll over the living room cracking up. It's hilarious.

I totally want a Wii. I've never had as much as a game boy but I'm finally coming around!

I haven't showered in a few days. Disgusting, I know, but no one in the house is getting any sleep lately and I ALWAYS choose sleep over shower.

I'm not the kind of mother who rejoices at the miracle of life every time her baby cries. I still am in awe over the miracle but I definitely have a breaking point.

I get soooo jealous of women who have effortless pregnancies resulting in ZERO stretch marks.

I ate a whole bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs...by myself.

I think Kate Gosselin is a TERRIBLE dancer. And has a super awkward TV presence.

I'm addicted to Community. I seriously laugh at almost EVERY Abed line.

I totally punched my husband in the ribs the other night
because I was dreaming an ex-boyfriend was trying to kill me.

I painted my new lamp a pale blue. And then painted it yellow. And then back to pale blue. Just to find out the dang thing doesn't even work. Guess it's back to Lowe's!

I looked out my window and realized spring has sprung!

Some colleagues/friends of mine have put our heads together to make a magazine.

It's still in the works so I can't tell you a lot of details but I can give you a potential sneak peak. I wrote a tutorial for this little gem today. Just sent it in so I'm unsure if it made the cut. Regardless, I think it's so cute!
Have I mentioned I love Dick & Jane? I read them as a child and can't get enough of them.
Plus, I love the way their mother dresses. :-)

A good friend of mine gave me a subscription to "Real Simple," for my birthday. I got my first issue yesterday and I think I'm in love! Tim was constantly laughing at the embarassing amount of times I squealed, "Ooo! Cute!" and "Wow! That's so smart!"

These outfits are one of the many things I swooned over.

I'm sooo loving the cardigan and ruffles here.
And who knew cropped pants could be so chic?!
I felt so enlightened.

*Can you tell I've been watching way too much "Singing in the Rain," lately?

Have you all heard of Elaine from clothedmuch?

She is all about modest, comfortable, STYLISH clothing and posts what's she's wearing EVERYDAY.

I'll come right out and admit I've stolen a few outfit ideas from her.

I sat down with her (via email-I just love technology) and bent her ear on her fabulous self.

You seem to be walking A LOT around campus & the city. What type of shoes are your favorite and which take the wear & tear the best?

I have three that I really love right now - my Geox flats, Tsubo boots, and my new Bass sandals. I could walk miles in them and my feet would be okay! The Tsubo boots look the best even after all the beating it took after traveling, snow, and rain! It is leather so that is probably why..

Do prefer wearing skirts over jeans? If so, why?

I prefer skirts over jeans in the summer time and I prefer jeans in the winter!

I know once I got married and had a baby I felt that I should dress more “grown up.” Has your style changed during the years?

YES!! I am the same way. Friends who've known me for a long time know I didn't dress like this always.. lol! I would say ever since I started my blog it has become more classic. I've always dressed comfortably and practically but that's all I really cared about. Now that I've finally discovered my style, I am drawn to classic and modern pieces.

You’re such a great advocate for modest dressing! How do you turn clothes that, by themselves aren’t modest, into something you can wear?

I tend to stay away from the obvious immodest clothing. But there are always ways to wear them! You could turn a strapless dress into a modest one by covering it up with a cardigan or wearing a blouse underneath, wearing a lacey flouncy skirt underneath a short skirt, etc. It's a great way to let your creativity take over!

Do you have days when you want to wear something loud,? What do you wear on those days?

Yes! ...except I don't have a lot of bright colors so I stick to mixing prints and patterns.

When shopping at thrift stores, do you look more for brands or just shapes in clothing?

I look for quality. You can usually tell by feel if the fabric is a good quality or not. But brands are important in knowing if it is good quality or not. Old Navy, for example, doesn't have the best quality so 95% of the time you should skip over them.

What are your go-to items in your wardrobe?

Definitely my J Brand skinnies, a loose-fitted t-shirt, leopard print scarf, Geox flats, and motorcycle jacket!

If you had a $1,000 shopping spree where would you spend it?

I'd love to spend it at The Gap!! I used to work there but even with the discount I couldn't bring myself to buy too many clothes there!

What would be your dream job?

To be a stylist! I would love to help people build outfits with the clothes they already have.

If you could raid anyone’s closet, (celebrities included!) who’s would it be?

I'd love to raid Gwyneth Paltrow's closet. She always looks so fresh and timeless.

So this week I thought I'd share a story from back in my dating days.

So I met this guy, we'll call him *Eric in church one Sunday. We didn't have a lot in common but he was nice and always greeted me every Sunday. A few months after moving to the city someone decided to crash into my car and it ended up in the shop for 2 weeks. I had been going to physical therapy for some whiplash injuries and my usual ride wasn't available. He offered to take me. Thinking he was harmless I accepted. He dropped me off to my appointment without a hitch and picked me up on time. On the way home he asked if it'd be okay to pick something up to eat on the way home. Sure, I said, afterall, it wasn't my call really. We get to a restaurant and he asks me to go in with him to "pick something up." I ask if I can stay in the car since I'd just been thru 2 hours of physical therapy and wasn't feeling great.

He insists. I oblige.

When get inside and, what a surprise! Three other couples are at a table and "welcome us to join them." I was horrified. He had "surprise!" set me up. I didn't know what to do. I didn't even bring my wallet with me since I thought I'd just be going to PT and back. He took me over to the table and introduced me as "his date." I was mortified. I got a glass of water and sat there for an hour before I begged him to take me home.

Needless to say, I never accepted a ride from him ever again.

One of my biggest pet peeves is having to take more than one trip up our stairs from the car to our apartment. Often times it causes a problem since I usually hit up several stores in one outing. This is what I carried up today: 4 jumbo recyclable bags of groceries (these are from kohls and I love them! They are HUGE and are easily carried on your shoulders) A gallon of milk AND water My purse Target bag Storage bins And a 25 lb baby Who needs P90X when you're hauling THIS up the stairs?!

and if you're wondering what my engagement ring from Antoinette's looks like, here it is:

My platinum, 0.25 carat diamond ring. I love the bows on the sides and how the setting makes it looks like a square if tilted the right way even though it's a round. In fact, they don't even cut diamonds that way anymore! It was made in the 1920's and we got a great deal on it. Tim's band is platinum as well and we were told on our last visit that they have never seen once like it since!

My favorite jewelry store in all the world is a little shop called Antoniette's Antique Jewelry. It's where, after 3 frustrated weeks of ring shopping, I found my mecca. Within half an hour I found THREE rings that looked beautiful on my finger and they were all within our price range. Tim ended up picking one that I hadn't seen and it is gorgeous.

On our little vacation we stopped by.

I was in heaven. I tried on everything I wanted, even a 5 karat diamond that looked ridiculous on my teeny little hands. Tim spoiled me and bought me this for an "extra," anniversary gift:

I never got super dressed up this week but I was LOVING this button up. I like to think of it as a poor man's J. Crew button up like the one on Love and Photographs. I love the colors and LOVE that it goes well with a messy up do since that's what I've been sporting a lot these days. It does remind me though that I really need some pants that fit. And some that aren't black. (remember my love/hate relationship with black?) I bought these 6 months post baby and now 10 months post baby they're falling off. ....and they're too long. I keep meaning to hem them but most my the projects for me fall behind projects for others.

I actually have a really cute necklace on that has Baby O's initial.
It's really simple but looks nice with the busy material.

Birthday Quilts

Baby O turns one next month and since I've banned myself from buying him anymore toys* I planned to make him something special. I wasn't quite sure what until a few weeks ago when my sister convinced me I have the guts to do a quilt. It took me awhile to summon up the courage but once I saw the fabrics I was willing to try!

Here's what I'm making:

I started sewing the squares two nights ago and I am so in love with how it's turning out.

Me. I do. In fact, I have one called romantic big band jazz in my cd player right now.

if I ever actually wear aprons?
Absolutely I do. I wear them while washing dishes, scrubbing toilets, doing laundry, I even fell asleep in one once (although that was kind of gross). I find it helps me feel a little dressed up since from the front it looks like a skirt and it gives a little pick me up to feel a little cuter.

if I get good use out of my pack'n'play for baby O?
*I get asked this a lot for some reason?

I do! I use it all the time. Mostly when I want to cut or measure fabric I'll stick him in it with some toys. Also, I use it as a foot rest when it's packed up since we still don't have an ottoman.

what nationality am I?

I'm half Filippina half Caucasian. Which means I grew up eating rice at every meal, (except for pancake Sundays) played baseball AND know how to sing karaoke in tagalog, visayan and english.

am I superstitious?

Yes! In fact, it's kind of an uncontrollable thing. I was raised with certain superstitions and no matter how nonsense they seem, I always end up abiding by them, "just in case." My husband makes fun of me for this alllll the time. But hey, I always observed one that made your teeth crooked if you didn't and I'm the only one out of all three kids who didn't need braces so boo-yah.

Professionally, I LOVED working for Beneficial in SLC. I felt so cool running errands and having my own name plate and having to press the elevator button to go to the top floor. :-)
Non-professionally, I LOVE being a mom. At first it was weird for me to stay home and every once in awhile I miss getting into pencil skirts and setting up client meetings but most of the time I like singing songs with Owen. :-)

On the Menu: Spicy Beef Noodle Bowl

This delicious noodle bowl has a great thai-like taste and is SUPER fast.

I make this one ALL the time.

I, of course, add a little Sriracha but that's just me.

Spicy Beef-Noodle Bowl

Makes: 4 servings

Start to Finish: 20 minutes

Ingredients

1 lb. boneless beef sirloin steak, cut in thin strips
1 Tbsp. cooking oil
2 14-oz. cans reduced sodium beef broth
1/3 cup bottled peanut sauce
1-1/2 cups medium egg noodles (3 oz.)
2 cups broccoli florets
1/4 cup bias-sliced green onions (optional)

Directions

1. In Dutch oven brown beef strips in hot oil over medium-high heat. Add beef broth and peanut sauce; bring to boiling.
2. Stir in noodles; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 4 minutes, stirring occasionally to separate noodles. Add broccoli; return to boiling. Reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, for 3 to 4 minutes more or just until noodles are tender, stirring occasionally.
3. Divide beef and noodle mixture among four bowls. If desired, sprinkle servings with green onions. Serves 4.

I wore my bra inside out all day yesterday and didn't even notice.

I didn't wash the dishes all weekend.

Was so tempted to buy girl scout cookies from their stand at the grocery store but didn't because I found the girls annoying.

Watched 7 episodes of Dexter even though it gives me bad dreams at night.

Have spent more on lingerie this year post baby than I ever have before. I think I use the pity trip as an excuse to buy more. :-)

I'm obsessed with cookbooks.

I wanted to punch out the lady at Target who asked if Owen was adopted. "He must look like his Dad!" she said when I shot her the stink eye and said, "No."

I almost put a cube of Scentsy's Satin Sheets in my drink because I thought it was an ice cube.

I forgot my maiden name this week.

And my middle name.

Why do we have so many names?!

I had a free banana split at Trader Joe's before I had even eaten breakfast that day.

Tutorial: From Skirt to Apron

I know I said I'd put this up tomorrow but writing the post
helped me avoid doing my Spanish homework so here it is!

From Skirt to Apron:

Ever had a skirt that you just couldn't bear to throw away but never wore it?

Turn it into an apron and use it in the kitchen instead!

*Don't be intimidated by the many pictures!
I just wanted to be there with you every step of the way!

Start with:

A skirt

1/2 Yard of complimenting fabric

Tape Measure

Fabric Shears

An Iron

Pins

First, remove zipper if there is one and cut into three 7 in panels.
Make sure you measure from the TOP of the skirt and not the BOTTOM.
Follow the natural flow of the skirt to keep panels.

should look like this:

Next, Pin Panels together keeping the panels going upward like this:

the easiest way I found to do this is to place two panels on top of each other, right sides facing each other on the inside and pinning the right side. Then unfolding, turning it right side facing UP and place the last panel on top and pin the side.

Next, Sew Panels together by laying them flat and sewing straight thru, following your line of pins.
Hem the sides inward as well. Like this:

Cut your other fabric 18 inches across and 10 inches deep.
This piece is going to become your waistband.

Flip fabric right side up and sew short sides inward about 1/4 inch.

Then fold in half, right sides together, and sew raw edges together like this:

Turn inside out & iron flat.

Next, cut two strips 26" inches long and 4" inches wide for your ties.

Again, fold in half, right sides facing each other and sew along hem.
Repeat on second strip.

Next, fold one end into a triangle, pin, cut and hem.

Turn inside out and iron flat. Repeat with second strip.

Next, take your freshly ironed band and fold in half, placing it over the top of your skirt, placing the fold at top so there will be fabric on the back and front covering your raw edges. Pin to secure.

It should look like this on the back and front.

Next, insert your ironed ties into front flaps and secure with pins.

Sew along edges.

Soon, you should have this:

Wa-la!

There are lots of different shapes you can do (the previous one I did was a bit different but one style at a time!) you could even add a pocket or two if you'd like.

If you make one feel free to send me a picture, it's worth bragging about!

Another fun hint:
Go to a thrift store to find a fun skirt there on the cheap!
I bought this one at Wal-Mart in the clearance section for $3!

On the Menu: Peanut Butter Cup Pie

This pie is SO easy to make but it looks (and tastes!) like you've spent all day with it!
I've made this for a few dinner parties and they STILL talk about it.

1 pkg. (8 oz.) PHILADELPHIA Cream Cheese, softened

1/2 cup plus 1 Tbsp. creamy peanut butter, divided

1 cup cold milk

1 pkg. (3.4 oz.) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Instant Pudding

2-1/2 cups thawed COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, divided

1 OREO Pie Crust (6 oz.)

3 squares BAKER'S Semi-Sweet Chocolate

BEAT cream cheese and 1/2 cup peanut butter in medium bowl until well blended. Add milk and dry pudding mix; beat 2 min. Whisk in 1 cup COOL WHIP; spoon into crust. Refrigerate until ready to use.
MEANWHILE, microwave remaining COOL WHIP and chocolate in microwaveable bowl on HIGH 1-1/2 to 2 min. or until chocolate is completely melted and mixture is well blended, stirring after each minute. Cool completely.
SPREAD chocolate mixture over pudding layer in crust. Microwave remaining peanut butter in small microwaveable bowl 30 sec.; stir. Drizzle over pie. Refrigerate 4 hours or until firm.

My new apron book mentioned the idea of turning an old skirt into an apron.

I found one hidden in the back that I'd loved but never figured out how to work it into an outfit.

I started out with this:

It's a really cute, almost Parisian print but I just couldn't get it to work.

Anywho, another thing I should mention about myself is I hate reading directions.

If I absolutely have to, usually I just skim thru them to get "an idea," and I go from there.

(*except in cooking!)

Tonight was no different. I skimmed through the pictures in the book and picked out some fabric and a shape that I liked and just copied it. I was so proud of myself! I did it all on my own, without any instructions!

About an hour later I had this beauty:

I LOVE it. I did make one small mistake but at 10 o'clock at night, I think I deserve at least one.

Especially since it was small. I argued back and forth with myself for a few minutes on whether I should add a pocket but decided I liked it how it was.

Took off that lame cover cloth, gave it some new color and added a mirror.

I looooove having the mirror there. It's great for the quick inspection before I leave the house.

Remember this Martha Stewart necklace?

I tried my hand at it.

The rub off method didn't really work for me so I decided to just spray paint them straight "vintage copper."

I rather like the way it turned out. More importantly I hope my sister likes how it turned out! :-)

baby boy blue.

Along with missing Theresa's shower, I also hadn't finished her baby gift. I finally got it delivered to her last night. Her due date is so close to mine with Owen and just talking with her about another baby boy makes me want another so badly! But then I came home and remembered how long it took me to fit back into my jeans. :-) Dear Baby #2: We can wait for you. :-)

Here's what I made for little baby Kaiden:

A set of burp cloths, an "N" tank top, sailbot tank top and some little baby blue shorts.

I thought they were so cute! I wish I would've been more crafty before Owen was born.

I really like giving gifts that I thought were helpful.
Can you believe we only had TWO burp cloths until Owen was 7 weeks old?
I had no idea we needed them. Luckily, My SIL Cindy made me a set of probably 20!
Phew! They are LIFESAVERS.

Anyway, Congratulations Theresa! Can't wait to meet the little guy!

My nephew Linkon is turning one this week! It's amazing how fast times flies! Even though Linkon isn't my son I get so attached to him! His mom, Kari, and I were pregnant and the same time, both had boys and they were born exactly 10 weeks apart. I love this little guy!

I'm on a huge sewing kick so naturally I made him something handmade.

I saw some really cute owl onesies at the store a few weeks ago that were $11!
I figured I could make some just as cute and so I did. :-)

Robert, his dad, used to have this old stuffed animal of a dog when he was little so I decided to try to make Linkon a little animal to carry around. I came up with this turtle from the book, "Bend the Rules Sewing" by Amy Karol. I actually liked how it turned out! I'd make another if it weren't so tedious. :-)

So I couldn't handle my tote failure from a few days ago....

I tried again with ALMOST all of the right materials. I couldn't for the life of me find iron on vinyl and with the slushy snow I wasn't going to run around looking for it.

Here's what I came up with the second time around:

So I've heard a lot of good things about this tutorial and decided to give it a try. I even invested in a stapler, which, after 3 years of marriage somehow never came into our home beforehand. (invest may be too strong a word. I bought it for $2.99 at Smith's Grocer.) I was a bit lazy after running all my errands today that I didn't actually make it to the craft store for everything I needed and came home armed with a stapler, duct tape & the intention of making a tote in "10 minutes," as one reader commented.

This was not to be had.

First, I realized I had nothing to make handles with. No ribbon, or anything! Which, to my luck, was one of the first steps. After scouring about the house I finally decided to sew some fabric together and turn it inside out for the straps.

Next, I began the tutorial. Not five minutes into the project, my stapler broke.

So I decided I would sew it instead. Then my sewing needle broke.

After having my husband replace the needle (that thing was STUCK I tell you!) I went about sewing the tote instead of the duct tape/staple method. After I finished I looked at it and thought....."Yuck."
The plan was to give this to a friend of mine thru the handmade swap but honestly, I'm much too embarrassed. Maybe I'll attempt to fix it one of these days, but for now I'm going to tuck it away where I can't see it so the shame can't follow me.

Here's what it was supposed to look like:

I'm going to just chalk this up as a lesson to be learned.
1. Make sure you have the required materials
2. You get what you pay for in cheap staplers

3. Even the most idiot proof projects can be foiled.

Found some great stuff today at the flea market! I went in to buy more vintage fabric (at .50 cents a yard I couldn't resist!) and ended up finding some really cool things.

An antique tissue box! How pretty is that?! and only $3.99!

Folding serving tray $2.99...I was THIS CLOSE to buying it.

Isn't a great picture (I take them discreetly with my camera phone, hence the poor quality) but this dresser was amazing. I love the doweled feet! You could EASILY re-stain this and make it look fabulous.

A real vintage sock monkey doll! I almost picked this up as well but for $15 I can get a brand new one that is sure to be clean and this one was going for $12.

I'm not a great seamstress but I LOVE to sew. My mother, grandmother and sisters are all incredible at it (hence my fascination) so I've dabbled at it a little more over the years. Lately, I've been participating in a "handmade swap," and had 5 handmade items to make.

First up, is the floral embellished top I made for my good friend Carly. (I got the tutorial here.)
I went to a secondhand store and scored a nice Merona brand t-shirt for $1.99 and since I couldn't find another just like it I matched the color to another shirt with similar fabric for $3.99. I kick myself now for not taking any before pictures but here's how it turned out!

I think it turned out pretty cute! I'm going to rummage thru my closet to see if I have any shirts that need a little updating. It really only took about an hour or 2 and really added some flair.

My next project was actually for a stroke of great luck! Since having baby Owen my body has obviously changed. I still fit into my size 0 jeans BUT I have a little bit of "an apron" (a bit of hanging stretched out skin...yuck, I know) I've tried to find jeans that go to your WAIST and not just your hips but they seem to be non-existent these days. Well, just my luck, a friend of mine was a consultant at the former Modbe clothing (A modest line of clothing where the jeans don't start at your buttocks!) and she happened to have my size! Better yet, she was willing to TRADE for a handmade item instead of cash!
Here's what I made for her:

I found the vintage fabric at the flea market for only .50 cents a yard! (I'm going back for more!)

Basil-Mozzarella Cheeseburgers

Ingredients:

1/4 cup finely chopped onion (I omitted this)
2 tablespoons fine dry bread crumbs (I used Italian bread crumbs since it's what I had in my pantry already)
2 tablespoons finely chopped green sweet pepper (optional)
2 tablespoons catsup
1 tbls horseradish
1 tbls mustard
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 lb lean ground beef
4 slices smoked or regular mozzarella cheese
4 whole wheat hamburger buns, split and toasted
Fresh Basil leaves

Directions:
1. In a medium mixing bowl combine onion, bread crumbs, and green pepper. Add the catsup, horseradish, mustard, salt, and black pepper. Add ground beef; mix well. Shape the meat mixture into four 3/4-inch-thick patties.
2. Grille patties on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium coals for 7 mins. Turn burgers; grill 7 to 11 minutes more or until no pink remains, topping each burger with a slice of cheese for the last 2 minutes of grilling.
3. Serve burgers on toasted whole wheat buns with fresh basil leave and the Red Sweet Pepper Relish.

Makes 4 Servings

Red Sweet Pepper Relish:
In a food processor bowl combine 1/2 cup purchased roasted red sweet pepper strips; 1 tbls finely chopped pitted rip olives; 2 tsps olive oil; 2 tsps snipped fresh thyme or 1/2 tsp dried thyme, crush; and 1/3 tsp ground black pepper. Cover and process with several on-off turns until coarsely chopped. Cover and chill until ready to serve. Makes about 2/3 cup.

I have to say, these.were.delicious. I wasn't sure they'd be any different than the feta or turkey-dijon burgers we make but the basil puts just enough of a different taste that I fell in love! I prepared AND cooked them within half an hour. Definitely a great one for a quick, yet tasty meal.

I actually made a few changes. I omitted onions, and green pepper. Instead of whole wheat buns I used kaiser rolls and obviously, it being January, I broiled them in the oven for about 8-10 mins instead of grilling them outside. Also, I had it without the Red Sweet Pepper Relish (mostly because I forgot about it) but even without it these burgers were super yummy.

Let me know how it goes for you if you give it a try!

So I feel really silly. I thought things were much more expensive at Lowe's than they actually are! I am now a convert to the Lowe's experience. I was able to find the exact color I want for the shutters and since the colors in our "apartment living," kitchen are so gross I decided to just go with ivory for the spice rack. It's not an avalanche of change but just enough to make it look nice.

This is the best picture I could get. I decided to do them vertical so I could mirror them. The other shutter is on the other side of the double doors to Owen's room. I love the color though and shutter #1 is near the kitchen making me SUPER excited to stick recipes, groceries lists, etc in it!

I found a great thrift store today! It's kind of like the poor man's Deseret Industries in that it's not as cool but instead of being for the "poor man," it'll actually cost you a little more. I found some old fashioned shutters that I've been looking for FOREVER for only $4.99! I almost didn't buy them but then I remembered how long it took me to find them! Just before I left I found a spice rack for only $3.99! That went into my basket as well. I already want to go back and get a few other things I saw and left behind but one project at a time! (or in this case two!)

These shutters obviously need some work. I've cleaned them up a little and even went to Walmart (did I mention I'm cheap?) to pick up some powder blue spray paint and ......they didn't have any!! dun, dun, dun! Now i'm not sure what color to paint them. Any ideas? I'm been thinking maybe ivory, red, or green? Not sure still. They're going on a white wall since ALL of our walls are white (thank you apartment living...) so I thought maybe yellow wouldn't be a great choice. I'm open to your suggestions!

I cleaned this up a little too and was too excited to empty out a drawer that I put it up without painting it. I have the same dillema here since I couldn't find blue paint so suggest away! I may just break down and go to Lowe's or something and pay the extra dollar or two to find the color I want there.
